Kpasenpke, August 18, 2024 — A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours has left students of the STEM Senior High School (SHS) in Kpasenpke confined to their dormitories, as several buildings on the school campus were inundated by floodwaters.

The rain, which began at approximately 5 p.m., continued unabated until midnight, causing significant disruption to normal school activities. According to reports, the assembly block, assembly hall, and several other structures on campus were affected, with floodwaters seeping into these buildings and causing considerable damage.
"The rain started so suddenly and was so heavy that it overwhelmed the drainage systems around the school," said a staff member who preferred to remain anonymous. "By the time it stopped around 11 to 12 a.m., the entire campus was covered in water."
Students, who were forced to stay in their dormitories due to the dangerous conditions outside, described the situation as chaotic. "It was really scary," said one student. "The rain kept pounding, and we could hear the water rising outside. We couldn't go out, and we were just hoping the water wouldn't reach our dormitories."
The flooding has raised concerns about the infrastructure at the school, particularly the drainage systems which were unable to cope with the volume of water. "This is not the first time we’ve had problems with flooding," said another staff member. "But this is by far the worst. We need better drainage and proper maintenance to prevent this from happening again."
The school administration is currently assessing the extent of the damage. It is expected that classes will be disrupted for some time as efforts are made to clean up and repair the affected areas. Parents and guardians have been notified of the situation, and some have expressed concern about the safety of their children.
In the meantime, local authorities have been called in to assist with the cleanup operation. It is hoped that with their help, the school will be able to resume normal activities soon. However, the incident has highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and better preparation for extreme weather events in the region.
As climate change continues to affect weather patterns, schools like STEM SHS in Kpasenpke may need to implement more robust measures to protect their students and facilities from the increasingly unpredictable and severe weather conditions.
