Guru Disqualified From SRC President Race

The SRC issued a statement indicating that Guru did not meet the qualifications necessary to run for the position.

According to a vetting report dated August 16, 2024, the SRC Vetting Committee assessed the eligibility of multiple candidates, including those aspiring to be treasurers, general secretaries, and presidential or vice-presidential candidates. However, certain candidates were found to fall short of the required criteria.

The report specifically noted that Guru, along with Lawrence Edinam Egleh, was disqualified due to their status as non-residential students, which is a disqualifying factor for the election.

The University of Ghana SRC Constitution mandates that candidates must fulfill specific residential conditions to be eligible for executive roles.

The report stated, "Upon reviewing the submitted documents, it was found that two candidates for the presidential and vice-presidential roles declared themselves as non-residential students, which they confirmed during the vetting process."

The constitution clearly requires students to be residents of one of the university’s halls and to meet their hall's constitutional criteria to be eligible for leadership positions.

As a result, the Vetting Committee concluded that Guru and Egleh did not meet these residential requirements, making them ineligible to compete for the SRC presidency.

The committee's report emphasized, "After thoroughly evaluating the qualification criteria, it was observed that Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh do not meet the requirements as outlined in Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG-SRC Constitution, and therefore, they are not eligible to contest for an Executive Officer position within the University of Ghana Students' Representative Council (UGSRC)."
