At the beginning of August, drivers in Ghana experienced some relief as Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) reduced the prices of petrol and diesel at the pump.
A recent report highlights that the price reductions, effective from August 1st to the 15th, were welcomed by many.
Top OMCs such as GOIL, Shell, Star Oil, and Zen Petroleum adjusted their prices, with petrol now ranging between Gh¢14.42 and Gh¢14.02 per litre and diesel between Gh¢14.99 and Gh¢14.48 per litre.
This reduction in prices was linked to a drop in the cost of refined petroleum products on the international market. Unlike some other African countries, Ghana reviews its fuel prices every two weeks.
According to the National Petroleum Authority, the price of refined petroleum products saw a decline, with petrol falling to US$817.75 from US$842.98 per metric tonne, and diesel decreasing to US$755.93 from US$792.32 per metric tonne.
Crude oil prices also dropped in July, with Brent crude falling from $87 to $80 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) from $84 to $73 per barrel.
As of Monday, the prices at various OMCs were as follows:
