Akufo Addo Makes New Appointments

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has recently appointed Deputy Chief of Staff, Fawaz Aliu, and two others as new ambassadors. Mr. Aliu, in addition to his current duties, has been named an Ambassador-At-Large.

This appointment follows a similar move two months ago when the President appointed his Executive Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante, as an Ambassador-at-Large. Nana Bediatuo Asante, who has served in his role as the President’s Executive Secretary since 2017, received his new position during a ceremony at the Jubilee House. At that same event, President Akufo-Addo also issued credentials to nine newly appointed diplomats, emphasizing the importance of promoting Ghana’s image and interests on the global stage.

In the most recent ceremony held on Wednesday, August 7, at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo also appointed Major General Charles Kojo Abedi Awity as Ghana’s Ambassador to Serbia and Mr. Peprah Ampratwum as Ambassador In-Situ.

The role of an Ambassador in situ refers to an individual who is consistently involved in significant events or decision-making processes, often playing a crucial role in influencing outcomes. This title combines the duties of an ambassador with the idea of being "in situ," meaning on-site or physically present.

President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the abilities of the three appointees, expecting them to excel in their new roles and further enhance Ghana’s diplomatic relations worldwide. He urged them to strengthen Ghana's connections with other nations and to seek out investment opportunities for the country.

On behalf of the group, Major General Abedi pledged to serve Ghana with dedication and excellence.

However, some Ghanaians have raised concerns about the timing and necessity of these appointments, especially given the current economic challenges. Critics argue that the new appointments appear insensitive, particularly amid ongoing calls for the President to reduce the size of his government.
